Gillian Dana is a Boston-based double bassist passionate about contemporary collaborations. Originally from New York, Dana received a bachelors in music education and double bass performance from Ithaca College and is a certified music educator. After noticing a trend of performances of works post-dating 1950, Dana fully embraced the new-music community. Being in Boston has allowed for many exciting projects, most recently working on Evan Ziporyn’s Blackstar project with the Ambient Orchestra, and premieres with the Wet Ink Ensemble at this February’s New Music Festival.

As an educator, Dana is trained in the Suzuki method, mainly working with primary string players. Dana currently teaches at the Bridge Boston Charter School; in the past she has also taught at the Dryden Central School District (in a special education placement), Saint Mary’s School, and Skaneateles School District. Being a wide array of experiences by age of student, socioeconomic placement, etc., these have been vital teaching experiences.

Currently completing a Masters in Contemporary Music Performance at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, Dana hopes to keep pushing the boundaries of double bass repertoire, working closely with composers to expand contemporary bass repertoire.
